Hello Mike. Come and have a seat, please.
Thank you. You asked to see me. Is it about my report?
Yes, Mike. Actually, I’m very interested in your topic--oral history.
How did you come up with this idea?
1I first heard of this idea from the Internet. Then, I went to a lecture a week ago and I saw the definition of it on the handouts from the teacher.
I became quite interested in it, so I decided to write a report on this topic.
Ok. The topic may be nothing new but it has been changing in recent years because of the development of science and technology.
That’s true. One thing I realized is that the Internet allowed more people to have better access to oral history, so the students became more interested in it because of the information they got.
2However, the most important influence from the Internet is that a lot of resources, such as the recording, can be well kept online.
In the past, lots of historical records were lost or damaged, which is a shame.
2Digital information can be stored for much longer.
So, hmm, you relate oral history specifically to local football.
What made you choose this direction?
Yeah. Actually, I knew nothing about football before.
I don’t really watch football games. Neither do my friends.
3Luckily, I could discuss this topic with my father because he has a lot of knowledge about it. He’s a big fan of it.
No wonder. Where did you find all the records of the past games?
I don’t really think the local football team would post them on the Internet.
You’re right. I tried a few sports websites, but I couldn’t find any.
I also went to the biggest bookstore in town to check whether they sold anything relevant, but the attempt wasn’t successful either.
4Later, I found what I wanted in the oldest library in town, so I borrowed all the old newspapers with reports about the games.
You worked hard. How did you get in touch with the retired football players?
I did some research online. There was limited information about the players.
Then I went to the local football club to ask the current owner, but he couldn’t remember.
5When I was about to leave, I found an old phone book there. The numbers are still valid. So I got in touch with some of the players. It’s like treasure hunting.
Interesting! Maybe you can write something about it.
I will try.
There are some things that you could improve in your report and the recordings.
Oh, feel free to point them out.
6I saw the questions for the football players you prepared on the draft. I think some of them are too complex. You should simplify them.
I was afraid those players wouldn’t understand if they are too simple.
OK. I will do that later.
7And the interview with the players lasted about two hours. It is just too long.
Most of the listeners won’t be patient enough to finish it all.
I will do some editing and make it shorter.
8Yeah, that would be better. What equipment did you use for the recording? The quality of the recordings is really bad.
I wonder if you could find better equipment and do it again.
Oh, that would be a lot of work. I will try to see if I can do that.
How about my topic about the performance of our local football team over the years?
9It's a good topic, but I think it’s too general. You should probably be more specific and add more details.
10And your report is filled with too many facts. Remember, this is different from writing a news report. I guess I over quote their words and add some unnecessary facts in the report.
Yes. You need to give your own ideas about the football club and everything.
Thank you so much for the advice.
I am happy to help.
