Susan and Chris, how is your group work going?

We chose music and its influence on people as our topic.

It is a very interesting and creative topic. You have made a good choice. What have you learned so far, Chris?

Music undoubtedly has an influence on people, and people know how to use this.

1For example, some music festivals use rock music as background music even though it may not suit the overall style, but it can make people memorize the festival better.

Yes. I think it’s the same reason why some restaurants are always playing music for the customers.

2That’s right. What reference books are you using, Susan?

I’m currently using a book named Music and the Nerve.

It is a quite popular book and it’s just updated recently. But I chose it mainly because it’s a very practical book.

Yes, I think it’s a great book too.

3And I use the data analysis method recommended by the book when I’m writing the report.

Even though it looks a little boring, it is helpful because numbers are very persuasive.

It’s true. Data, by all means, makes your writing more reliable and trustworthy.

Have you found anything inspiring for creating experiments to test the influence of music?

4Yeah, the University of Warwick is doing a very interesting study.

Instead of trying to study the psychological impact of music like whether if it makes you happy, they studied how people ‘s bodies react to different kinds of music.

When people listen to rock, their heart rate may increase. I think it’s very interesting.

5And some postgraduates from University of Sydney have been doing a similar experiment.

They play jazz, classical and other kinds of music to different groups of office workers who all have a deadline to meet.

The result shows that music can help people release their stress from work.

That’s why many people go to a concert or symphony hall to listen to music after work or on the weekends.

6That can be a reason. A research carried out by the University of Iowa focuses on whether music can improve people's work efficiency.

In fact, people did seem to work more efficiently in the experiment.

Yeah, I’ve seen that research too.

One serious drawback of that experiment is they used 4 farmers, 4 office workers and 4 truck drivers in the test, only 12 people in total.

I don’t really think the results can be generalized.

It’s true. They need more volunteers to justify their findings.

I agree.

From what I have just heard, everything is going smooth for your project.

Actually, we’ve got some problems.

Yeah, we are preparing a questionnaire.

I think there should be at least 30 or 40 questions, but we only came up with about 15 and we’re running out of ideas.

This area is very professional. It might be difficult for you.

7There are some materials on the Internet. If you know the right websites to visit, I’m sure you will find something.

Oh, we only went to the library.

{[And some headphones we used for the experiment seem to be broken. There is noise in them.

It might influence the results. We don’t know what to do.

That’s easy. You can go to the equipment department and tell them the issue.][8]}

Maybe you will need to fill out a form.

{[What about the CD player? It doesn’t seem to be working. Do we also need to go the equipment department for this?

You can check the IT department. They will find out what’s wrong and get it fixed for you.][9]}

And we have one final thing which is really bothering us.

We are supposed to hand in the report by the end of the week, but there are still many things we haven’t finished.

We might not be able to meet the deadline.

Yeah, I know. If you do them one by one, it’s not the most efficient way.

10I think you should divide your work.

Say, Chris, you can take care of the hardware problems while Susan can work on gathering information.

This will speed up your work.

Thank you so much for your help!

My pleasure. Feel free to email me if you come across new problems.
