Janette: Mark, this semester has passed so quickly!
Mark: That's for sure! It seems like it's only just begun. Have you noticed that we have had quite more classmates this semester? 1I think most of them are probably 18 or 19 years old, and they are quite active in class. I'm probably the oldest, although I just turned 21.
Janette: Nah, you're not the oldest. I met two guys the other day, and they're in their thirties. It's good to have some variety, you know, not solely students straight from high school.
Mark: I agree. By the way, I was talking to our professor yesterday about our group study arrangements. I always love to become friends with my teammates before working together. 2But he doesn't think that matters. He emphasizes that communication and cooperation are crucial in this case.
Janette: I see what he means. When we begin working in a hospital environment, we would need the skills to cooperate well as a team, which can be acquired during the group study. For example, it's important to use the proper language to convey messages and ideas.
Mark: Oh, thanks for the clarification.
Janette: What do you think of the benefits of studying as a group?
Mark: Although I don't think it makes me more motivated in my studies, it's true that when you're with a group, every group member has his or her own strengths and ideas. 3There is always someone in the group with experience in a field you're not familiar with, and you can be inspired by their ideas.
Janette: Well, it may not be good for developing one's problem-solving skills because some people may become dependent on others.
Mark: That's possible.
Janette: Have you checked the workload of group study for this semester? The group study arrangement has thrown up a few challenges. I heard the subjects could be more difficult this time.
Mark: Yeah, an email from the professor mentioned that before the start of this semester. 4I think we covered some relevant topics in our readings last year, so we should be alright. But guess what, we are assigned to write 20 project papers! It was only ten papers last semester.
Janette: Unbelievable! Have you checked the deadlines?
Mark: Yes, quite tight. I guess we have to sacrifice the quality of some papers in order to meet all the deadlines.
Janette: I hope they can evaluate our performance with other types of work, rather than just essays.
Mark: Me too.
Janette: Besides, I'm surprised a law unit is incorporated in our first year. It doesn't seem important, and it's concerned with too many theories. It takes up time that I would rather be spending on nursing.
Mark: 5I don't agree. There are many laws that have an effect on the practice of nursing, without which the nursing environment would be unregulated and dangerous.
Janette: So now let's talk about our tasks we need to finish next semester. I heard that we are going to spend some time in the library doing research. Do you know anything about that?
Mark: Yes, that's an important part as it will influence our final grade.6Some senior students said that we are going to need the assistance of some staff there. Some of the materials required in the assignments are only accessible during the workdays. Others are unheard-of to me.
Janette: We'll have to ask a librarian for help, otherwise we won't make any progress.
Mark: True. And I'm not sure about the online forum.
Janette: 7The professor said there are many university lecturers and tutors who are on hand to answer the students' questions and provide support. We can visit it whenever we have questions.
Mark: That would be great.
Janette: How about the lectures? I think we have four to five lectures a week. That's a lot. What should we do?
Mark: The frequent lectures we're required to attend are of great benefit. 8As you know, I have had some lectures before and I find it keeps the material fresh in my mind if I take notes and look over them on a regular basis.
Janette: Thanks for the advice. What about writing assignments?
Mark: 9Well, I tend to procrastinate. So I'm currently working on how to manage my time wisely. I learned from an online video that I can prioritise my assignments according to the deadline and the difficulty. Then I work from the top down, but I also make sure to schedule some time to rest.
Janette: Sounds helpful! I may have to try that myself. I'm looking forward to our work placement coming up.
Mark: So am I, though I'm concerned about the test we'll do afterwards. We're required to set targets. I'm really bad at that.
Janette: 10I believe we should not push ourselves too hard. Any targets we set should be achievable. Don't forget to write a study diary of the points we are learning through the placement, it works wonders!
Mark: Got that.
